Alibaba Cloud will build an integrated cloud technology and innovation platform for the Beijing Winter Olympic Games in 2022 to empower the delivery of a green, inclusive and open Games.
The company has renamed its existing Zhangbei data center to Cloud Data Center for Beijing 2022, and will use the facility and other global infrastructure to provide cloud computing capability to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
Alibaba Cloud is the official cloud services and e-commerce platform services partner for the IOC, and was engaged last year to help the IOC transform the Olympic Games for the digital era.
“The theme of a green, inclusive, open and clean Olympic Winter Games resonates strongly with us at Alibaba Cloud. We believe true sustainability goes hand in hand with technological advances,” Alibaba Cloud president Simon Hu said.
“Beijing 2022 will give us an opportunity to show the world how our technology is capable of driving the digital transformation of the Games, creating a more efficient and exciting event experience while bringing a minimal impact to the environment.”
The Beijing 2022 Cloud Data Center in Zhangbei was one of Alibaba Cloud's first green data centers build in 2016. It has been designed to take advantage of weather-driven cooling for most of the year.
