Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund has commenced ticket sales for this year's JUMPSTARTER startup event, to be held on January 23-24.

JUMPSTARTER 2019 will be held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre as part of the 2019 Startmeup Festival.

It will feature speakers including Executive Council convenor Bernard Chan, the chairman of Alibaba Group's Technology Steering Committee Wang Jian, and the founders of startups including AutoX, Wantedly, DayDayCook, Qupital, NEX Team and Carousell.

This year's JUMPSTARTER will focus on four major industries – advanced technology, smart city, retail, and financial services.

For the first time, the event has been opened to global participants. To reflect this, the event has been expanded to two days, featuring Hong Kong and global tracks. In total, 72 shortlisted startups across the two streams will showcase their innovations and business ideas.

The shortlisted startups were selected from a pool of over 600 applications and business proposals from startups across 35 countries and regions. Half of these are from the global track, with most coming from China, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and the US.

This year's event will also include a new stream for university students in Hong Kong. Participants in the JUMPSTARTER IdeaPOP! program will undergo training to learn best practices for jump-starting a business and pitching their ideas to potential investors.

The winning team from Pitch Day will be entitled to sponsorship from the Alibaba Entrepreneur Fund to attend “The First Jack Ma Netpreneur Prize” in Africa, as well as six-month Alibaba internship opportunities.

“As the biggest startup event in Hong Kong in terms of scale, JUMPSTARTER aims to provide a platform that connects startups, entrepreneurs and investors so that any entrepreneurs or young people can have the chance to jump-start their dreams in Hong Kong,” commented Cindy Chow, Executive Director of the Alibaba Hong Kong Entrepreneurs Fund.

“Building on the success of the last event, we have expanded its scale, opening it to global participants and inviting representatives from established companies to share their experience and insights on corporate innovation. Through this event we hope to boost entrepreneurship in Hong Kong by encouraging more dialogue and cooperation opportunities.”
