The Office of the Government CIO (OGCIO) has released a range of geospatial datasets on the revamped data.gov.hk portal that will allow users to overlay up to three datasets on an interactive map.

The geospatial data consists of 100-plus datasets covering topics including population statistics, public facilities, traffic data and schools.

Users will be able to extract data entries of selected sets by self-specified areas or district boundaries.

Developers can use data on the portal to develop innovative targeted applications and services, the OGCIO said.

To streamline the process of data downloading for developers, functions have been introduced including JSON downloadable data sets, queued downloads and and enhanced search function. New tutorials are available on the data.gov.hk site that will familiarize users with the features of the online portal.

"Datasets on the portal provides valuable information to the public. Through the introduction of new and enhanced functions, we hope that the datasets will be more handy for use, especially by members of the public,” an OGCIO spokesperson said.

“The government strives to provide more open data in digital format for the public. Another 200 new application programming interfaces will be made available on the portal in March 2018 to facilitate developers' use.”
